Sacramento County approves plastic bag ban

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. (KCRA) —The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance Tuesday banning plastic bags in unincorporated areas of the county.

Board members voted 4 to 1 to approve the ban, making it the 148th jurisdiction in California to implement a ban on single-use plastic bags.

The ban, which goes into effect July 1, would apply in unincorporated areas, including populous sections of the Sacramento metro area.

The city of Sacramento adopted a plastic bag ban that went into effect on Jan. 1.

The Sacramento County ordinance matches a proposed statewide ban that was approved by the state Legislature but is on hold pending a public vote in November.

The county would be unaffected by the result of the state referendum.
